Victoria Beckham is one savvy marketeer. It’s just days before her SS17 New York fashion show, and, as usual, the designer is teasing out what we can assume are designs from the new collection.
Heading from hotel-to-studio to make final preparations, Beckham has used the brief moments between hotel lobby and taxi as her very own catwalk. Here’s what we have learnt from her savvy strutting.
Drop crotch trousers will be be a key look next summer
VB’s trousers have been veering into ‘wide stride’ territory for some time, but now they run the risk of slipping off her hips too. Her new cropped pants, with two hip pockets and six front buttons, draw the eye immediately to the crotch area, which is elongated more than any other trouser Beckham has worn previously.
And against all odds, the mother-of-four pulls off the drop crotch trews. With a black silk shirt tucked in and her dainty ankles framed by chunky gladiator sandals, there is nothing ‘skater’ about the star’s look.
Tip to take: The key to looking pulled together while wearing such a relaxed look is to add luxe-looking accessories into the mix. Beckham’s gold watch, top visor sunglasses (£295 at victoriabeckham.com) and rings all paint a picture of a sophisticated woman who knows entirely how to style herself, and has not, in fact, purchased the wrong size trousers.
The hip bag is back
The former Spice Girl is fond of an artfully placed hip bag. While us mortals struggle to find a practical balance, Beckham manages to sashay with her belongings perched neatly on her left side. Thankfully, the design she is carrying looks closer to a tote bag than a clutch and can be carried by holding the straps as usual when you actually have iPads, wet wipes, wallets, bottles of water etc to cart around.
Tip to take:If you can’t quite fathom Beckham’s ‘tote on hip’ styling flourish, simply swap your cross-body bags for a pochette, and carry on your hip instead of under your arm. Fashion editors favour the slim clutch style during fashion week, as it houses show tickets perfectly.
Chunky sandals are going nowhere
The famous VB statement - “I can’t concentrate in flats” - seems like a distant memory, as the star has been happily stepping out in adidas Stan Smiths and point-toe brogues for seasons past. Next on her footwear repertoire journey is Chunky sandals, which hint at a classic gladiator style owing to the cross-strap feature. Long may this practical side of Beckham reign!
You can’t go wrong with a white shirt
A crisp white button-down is an invaluable tool to keep you looking polished. Beckham has had a collarless, classic and tuxedo bib shirt on rotation this week, and all have looked utterly sleek tucked in her trousers.
