The stress of filming a movie while trying to launch her own cable network almost overwhelmed Oprah Winfrey.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Winfrey said that while filming Lee Daniels’ The Butler she was also shuttling back and forth to conduct celebrity interviews for her OWN network. Trying to do so many things at once left her feeling “a kind of numbness.”
After seeing an interview of Jason Russell, the film director who suffered a very public breakdown in 2012, Winfrey said she recognized some of the symptoms Russell described in herself. She said the revelation prompted her to slow down. “I had reached a point where I just couldn’t take in anymore stimulation,” she explained.
At the time, OWN was, in Oprah’s words “a struggling network.” Since then, its fortunes have rebounded with the addition of popular programs and Oprah’s own high-profile celebrity interviews.
In January, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong admitted that he had used performance-enhancing drugs during his career in an interview with Winfrey.
